Our students shined as we recently had the honor of hosting the City of Sweetwater Mayor, Jose “Pepe” Diaz, at our Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Elementary A4L Afterschool program. Mayor Diaz was greeted by 2nd and 3rd grade students who invited him on stage to participate in our dance class warm up along with our Executive Director Sheila Womble. The students then performed a piece, and then had time for a Q&A session with the children asking questions such as, “What does a Mayor do?” and “How do you become a Mayor?”
We then visited with our 4th graders where the Mayor shared his fond memories of the school, along with asking the students several questions about their artistic interests and skills.
Joining us for this special site visit were Principal Marie Orth-Sanchez and Assistant Principal Elena Octala. With generous support of The Children’s Trust, we have partnered with Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Elementary School for more than 5 years. We’re so proud of this programmatic partnership, students, staff and teaching artists!
