Wall (In) Summer Internship

Wall (In) is a multi-year program in which young artists from the Liberty City area will research the historic remains of a segregation wall on NW 12th Ave and co-design a community-based memorial for the site. This application is for the first year of the program, which will take place from June 12 – July 21, 2017. Participating youth will work alongside artist and designer Chat Travieso. Participants will learn about community-based art through an interactive curriculum that will cultivate artistic leadership, encourage civic engagement, and build critical thinking skills. Over the course of 6 weeks, the team will produce artworks about such issues as memory, social justice, and community; speak to historians, activists, community leaders, and other stakeholders to research the history of Liberty City and the segregation wall; investigate the current state of the wall by mapping the remains and talking to local residents; and co-design a memorial for the site that will be presented to the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places Commission.

This project will be part of the Youth Arts Leadership Summer (YALS) program housed at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center in Liberty City. The YALS program immerses young artists from the Liberty City area in a series of art intensives led by different practicing artists. Other committed partners include Arts for Learning and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs.

Participants must be residents of Liberty City. Acceptance to the program this year does not require or guarantee participation next year. There will be a separate application process for the following year’s program. Some prior arts experience is necessary. Applicants should have a strong interest in the arts and a willingness to learn about social and historical issues.

Applications for Wall (In) internships are not being accepted at this time.

Visit the Wall (In) webpage for more information, or contact Program Director, Ivy Bennett, ivy@A4LMiami.org, (305) 576-1212
